What is blood pressure ?

Nearly half of the people in the UK between the ages of 65 and 74, and a large percentage of those between the ages of 35 and 65, are affected by High Blood Pressure. Many people are completely unaware that they are suffering from High Blood Pressure.

Our blood is under pressure as it rushes through our arteries. A definition of blood pressure is the force that is applied to arteries ad the blood flows through them.

If you have diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease then it is even more important that your blood pressure is checked regularly and if raised kept under control. If you are carrying excess weight, consume too much salt and not enough fruits and vegetables, take no exercise and drink too much alcohol you are more likely to have high blood pressure The reasons for this are not fully understood but research has shown that if you are of South Asian origin then you are more likely to have diabetes or a heart attack later in life which means that it is important for you to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked at regular intervals.

Pharmaceutical companies are exploring ways to identify natural remedies for high blood pressure and to determine the active principles in those specific remedies to see if they can be duplicated. There are many natural remedies for high blood pressure and most are easily available.

The salt levels in many foods affect our blood pressure levels. Blood pressure levels can be affected by the salt levels in a great many processed foods.
